Bowen Therapy uses a series of light movements (which can be done through clothing, although you may be asked to remove heavy clothing) to stimulate the muscles and soft tissues, as Bowen Therapists believe that many problems in the body originate from the fascia of the body.
Small movements are made all over the body, at specific sites, and treatments can last up to an hour with small breaks in between.
Fascia is a strong connective tissue that connects all parts of the body. There are three main kinds, and they are all associated with different parts of the body: the skin, muscles/nerves/bones/blood vessels, and internal organs. There is a belief that many problems within the body can be traced back to the fascia, problems such as:
- Musculoskeletal
- Neurological
- Neuromuscular
Recent studies suggest that the facia is the largest sensory organ, intricately connecting all parts such that if one is damaged, other parts more remote can be affected. It has even been suggested that instead of many different muscles and muscle groups, the body may contain just one large muscle separated by many different pockets of fascia.
The touch in Bowen Therapy used in light, non-forceful and actually quite relaxing. Because of this, it is safe for practically everyone to use, from newborns to the elderly. It aims to stimulate the body’s natural ability to self-heal, holistically encouraging the body to return to its normal state of homeostasis. Being holistic, too, it doesn’t require a definitive diagnosis (for example, bursitis is causing your shoulder pain); as it treats the whole body the cause of the pain (as opposed to the symptoms), it eliminates the root cause along the way.
